the Trio

Ben Shirley / cello
Carolyn Johnston / english horn
Chris Childs / piano

Hailing from Atlanta, GA the Chris Childs Trio has been formed to realize the latest composition from Childs titled If I Were a Little Boy, I'd Be a GirlThis 30 minute, single-movement piece began as an experiment with two main goals in mind: 1) to concentrate on the more lyrical aspects of each of these instruments, especially the cello and english horn. Throughout the piece the piano often serves as an out-of-focus accompaniment for the other two instruments, though the piano does indeed have its own featured moments. 2) to create a work that lays out a tapestry of scenes while retaining thematic cohesion from beginning to end.

The title of the piece deals with a couple of things. Firstly, it's a simple statement on our innate human desire to change the past, regardless of whether or not we think we should even if it was possible. Secondly, it's a remark on the spectrum of sexuality and human nature, and the conundrum of spectrums existing in a world built on the ever-withering idea of the binary.

The Chris Childs Trio consists of Carolyn Johnston (Atlanta classical music scene), Ben Shirley (Faun and a Pan Flute), and Chris Childs (Faun and a Pan Flute). It is the aim of The Chris Childs Trio to manifest an embracing and inclusive attitude, always aiming to bridge the gap between the historically academic world of "classical" instrumental music and the world of DIY, "folk", and community based music scenes.
